Mudanya is a Marmara ferry port 12 km north of Bursa, and most travellers see it from the deck or the bus window. The town spreads along the coast for several km and takes in the second port of Güzelyalı. It earns one night if you want a slow waterfront evening between Istanbul and Bursa, and it earns a half day if you are already in Bursa. There is no beach resort here and no reason to build a trip around it.

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Buses run the coast road between Güzelyalı, Mudanya and Tirilye, and the Bursa connection is Bursaray metro to Emek plus the 1/M bus to the square by the ferry pier. For Kumyaka, Tirilye, the Eşkel beaches and the coast road west you need your own vehicle.

Watch out

Safety

Mudanya is a small, calm port town and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are the sea (no lifeguards on most beaches), unlit waterfront after dark, and the coast road west where the surface fails; keep to the main streets and swim where locals do.
  • Ferry timetables change by season and operator: check BUDO and İDO before you build a day around a sailing.
  • The Armistice House and Tahir Pasha Mansion keep museum hours and close one day a week: check before travelling for them.
  • The coast road west of Tirilye turns to dirt and has been cut by landslides: do not attempt it in a normal rental car.
  • Beaches here are small and scrappy; the better sand is 20 km west at Eşkel Plajı.
  • Summer afternoons on the exposed waterfront are hot; do the museums in the morning.
