Laguna Beach

Give Laguna Beach 2 nights without a car: sleep in the Village, walk to Heisler Park and Main Beach, use the free trolley for the rest.

Laguna Beach is a small coastal town in South Orange County, about 23,000 residents, built along a single highway between hills and coves. It is a walkable village with an art-colony history, a summer art festival season and a free trolley. Two nights covers the beaches, the galleries and one canyon art show; a car helps only for the canyon and the hills.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The town is linear along Pacific Coast Highway, so most trips are a walk or a short trolley ride. Laguna Beach Transit runs free trolleys year round on five neighbourhood routes plus weekend coastal and canyon routes; OCTA bus 1 runs along the coast about twice an hour. Parking downtown is paid and tight in summer, and towing is enforced.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime resort town; the real risks are the ocean (shorebreak, rip currents, no-lifeguard coves), summer traffic and parking tickets. Keep valuables out of sight at the beach.
  • Shorebreak waves cause neck and back injuries year round: ask a lifeguard before you swim.
  • Surfing is banned at many beaches; check the designated areas with lifeguards.
  • Summer parking is scarce and expensive; cars are towed from restricted spots.
  • Pageant of the Masters nights clog Laguna Canyon Road (CA 133): allow extra time.
  • Sales tax here is 8.25%, higher than other Orange County cities.
