Tutuala is the eastern tip of Timor-Leste, a Fataluku village of about 3,500 people inside Nino Konis Santana National Park. It is the base for the Ile Kére Kére cave paintings, the 42,000-year-old Jerimalai shelter, Valu Beach and the sacred island of Jaco. There is one guesthouse, one small shop and no reliable mobile data, so this is a place you plan around, not a place you drop into.

Getting around

The village is walkable. Everything else needs a vehicle or a guide: the sand track down to Valu Beach is about 9 km and drops roughly 70 m through jungle, often damaged after rain, and only passable in a 4WD when it is in good shape. Otherwise walk it or push a mountain bike, with plenty of water. Fishermen at Valu Beach take visitors across to Jaco Island for a few dollars.

Tutuala village

The old Portuguese pousada at the seaward end of the village: simple rooms, bucket-and-cup bathroom, water carried daily. The main place to ask about guides and the beach track.

Valu Beach

An 'eco village' with places to sleep plus rooms rented out by villagers, right by the sand and the boatmen to Jaco. Quieter, but further from the caves.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high exposure: the real risks are the dirt roads, heat, water and mosquitoes, plus crocodiles on the coast and at Ira Lalaro. Travel with a local guide, carry cash and water, and do not swim where people warn you off.
  • Bring all the cash you need in US dollars: there is no ATM and card payment is not a thing here.
  • The beach track can be washed out after heavy rain; ask at the guesthouse before committing a vehicle.
  • Cave paths are unmarked and involve long walks in tropical heat: take a local guide, water and a hat.
  • Do not buy or carry out turtle-egg shells, coral or mussel shells: export is illegal and many countries fine you on import.
  • Malaria and dengue are present, especially around Lagoa Ira Lalaro: use repellent and cover up at dusk.
  • Timor Telecom 2G coverage is patchy in and around the village; download maps and tell someone your plan before you leave Lospalos.
