Washago is a village of a few hundred people at the north tip of Lake Couchiching, where cottage country starts and the farmland ends. It has a beach, a marina, a handful of shops and a VIA Rail flag stop on The Canadian. There is no reason to build a trip around it, and every reason to break a drive or a rail leg here if the timing lines up.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: the village core is a 5-minute walk end to end, but the campground, the marina and the motels are 5–10 min apart on County Road 169 and Highway 11. No local bus. Boats moor at the marina at the mouth of the Trent-Severn before Lock 42.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are water (cold Lake Couchiching, fast Black River current), Highway 11 traffic at night, and winter driving on unplowed back roads.
  • The VIA station is unstaffed and the building is closed: wait on the platform, and check VIA status before you leave for the station.
  • Some Ontario Northland trips skip Washago: check the timetable before you plan around the bus.
  • Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on the back roads toward the Black River.
  • Black flies and mosquitoes are serious from late May to early July: bring repellent.
  • Most kitchens close by 20:00–21:00; the diner shuts at 15:00.
