Ferrol is Spain's Atlantic navy port and shipbuilding town, 110 km from Santiago de Compostela and the start of the Camino Inglés. The centre is compact and walkable, the naval museum is the main sight, and most travellers pass through in a night on the way to A Coruña or Santiago.

Walk: the centre sights sit within a small area, 20 minutes end to end. AlsaFerrol runs local buses at a flat fare of about €1.55 (2026 estimate, check). Cercanías narrow-gauge trains and Arriva buses link the ría towns.

Watch out

Safety

Ferrol is a working port and feels calm by day; the usual city rules apply at night around the bars. The real risks are Atlantic weather, wet cobbles and the long unlit walk back from the Castillo de San Felipe.
  • Rain is frequent from October to March; bring a waterproof layer.
  • The bus station has a ticket kiosk and no other facilities: buy food and water before you arrive.
  • There are no ferry services; cruise ships call but do not carry foot passengers onward.
  • The Camino Inglés from Ferrol is 110 km, above the 100 km minimum for a pilgrim certificate.
