Sde Boker is a small Negev kibbutz plus the Ben-Gurion College campus 4 km south, both on Highway 40 between Beer Sheva and Mitzpe Ramon. It is the practical base for Ein Avdat and Avdat, and the tomb of David Ben-Gurion sits on the ridge above the Zin valley. One night covers it; two if you want a full canyon hike.

Getting around

Each settlement is under 1 km across and walkable. Between the kibbutz, the college, Ein Avdat and Avdat, use a car (15 min at worst) or the Highway 40 buses; taxis must be ordered, usually from the college shopping centre, and cost extra on Shabbat. No public transport runs from Friday evening to Saturday evening. Dirt roads in the Zin basin need 4×4.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime; the real risks are desert heat, unmarked cliff edges in the Zin basin and Shabbat transport gaps. Check your government's travel advice for the region before booking.
  • No buses on Shabbat: Friday service ends mid-afternoon and Saturday service starts in the evening.
  • Ein Avdat closes the south entrance on busy days, so the walk runs north to south only.
  • Swimming in the Ein Avdat pools is banned and rangers enforce it.
  • Camping is banned inside nature reserves, which cover most of the Zin basin.
  • Do not feed the ibex; it harms an endangered species.
  • Summer daytime heat is severe; hike early and carry more water than you think you need.
