Montfort-sur-Meu

Give Montfort-sur-Meu half a day: Papegaut Tower museum, the medieval lanes and the Meu riverbank. Sleep in Rennes unless you want a quiet country night.

Montfort-sur-Meu is a small Breton market town 20 km west of Rennes, where the Meu and Garun rivers meet. It is a half-day stop, not a base: a 14th-century tower with a local museum, a handful of old streets, a forest edge and a saint's birthplace. Come by train from Rennes, walk it in two to three hours, eat a galette, go back.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • France and Monaco ↗France has run temporary identity checks at its internal Schengen land borders since 2015; carry a passport or EU/EEA national ID on trains and buses from Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
  • France and Monaco ↗Nights in France and Monaco draw on the same Schengen 90-in-180-day allowance as the rest of the area; Monaco does not reset or pause it.
  • France ↗France is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • France ↗TGV (including the low-cost Ouigo) and Intercités night trains need a seat reservation: a rail pass alone does not let you board.
  • France ↗Paris, Lyon and other large cities run low-emission zones that require a Crit'Air sticker on cars; check before you drive a hire car or your own car into a city.
  • France ↗Carry your passport or national ID card: police can ask for identification, and hotels register foreign guests.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Trains run to and from Rennes; regional Illenoo buses link the surrounding villages (lines to Talensac, Bédée, Iffendic, Breteil). A car helps for the forest and the villages.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Train from Montfort-sur-Meu station, direct

Big-city museums, markets and food; the natural pairing with a Montfort stop.

Iffendic

go

Door to door: Bus time check; about 20–30 min by car

Illenoo bus line 2, or about 10 min by car

Lakeside walks and forest country; bus service is sparse, so check times.

Bédée

caution

Door to door: Bus time check; about 20–30 min by car

Illenoo bus lines 7a, 7b or 12, or about 10 min by car

Small village; only worth it if you are already driving the area.

Talensac

caution

Door to door: Bus time check; about 20–30 min by car

Illenoo bus line 1, or about 10 min by car

Quiet farmland village; pair with a walk rather than a dedicated trip.

Saint-Maloovernight

Door to door: About 2–2.5 h (check)

Train via Rennes, then TGV or TER to Saint-Malo

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep on the coast.

Vitré

caution

Door to door: Time check

Train via Rennes, then TER to Vitré

Castle and medieval streets; doable as a long day from Rennes, not from Montfort.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are rural roads with no pavement, thin bus service after dark, and summer ticks in the forest — check yourself after walks.
  • Small-town hours: many kitchens close between lunch and dinner and on one or two weekdays — check before you travel.
  • The ecomuseum sits inside Papegaut Tower and keeps short, seasonal hours; confirm before making the trip.
  • Sunday and public holidays: most shops shut, and buses thin out.
