Penrose, New South Wales

Skip as a base: a village of about 250 people with one station and almost no services. Stop 30–60 min if you are driving the Hume, or sleep one night at a guesthouse.

Penrose is a tiny Southern Highlands village on the Southern Highlands Line between Bundanoon and Wingello, about 20 minutes off the Hume Highway near Marulan. There is no shop strip, no pub and no visitor centre: the station and a guesthouse are the whole town. It works as a quiet rail stop for trainspotters, a short leg-stretch on a Southern Highlands drive, or a single night if you want a bed away from Bowral and Mittagong.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk. Everything else needs a car: there is no local bus, and the station is served by a handful of trains a day. Driving is on the left; watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the drive (wildlife, narrow Highland Way turns, bushfire days) and having no services in the village if you arrive unprepared.
  • Very few trains stop at Penrose and weekend services are sparse: check the Transport for NSW timetable before you plan around the train.
  • No shops, no fuel and no pub in the village: buy food and fill up in Marulan, Bundanoon or Moss Vale.
  • Mobile coverage can be patchy in the surrounding hills.
  • Kangaroos and wombats on the roads around dawn and dusk.
  • Bushfire risk in summer: check Fire and Rescue NSW or the RFS app before driving on total fire ban days.
