Örebro sits on the Närke plains in south-central Sweden, built around a moated castle on the Svartån river where it meets lake Hjälmaren. It is a compact, walkable city — the castle, the open-air museum Wadköping and the city park sit within about 2 km of each other — and it works as a stop on the Stockholm–Gothenburg corridor rather than a destination in itself. Most travellers see it in a day; two nights covers Gustavsvik and a Nora side trip.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: castle to Wadköping is about 1.5 km along the river. City and regional buses converge on Resecenter beside the central station, with Järntorget as the second hub. Taxis and ride-hailing (Bolt) are available; the municipality rents out bicycles — ask at the tourist office in the castle.

Watch out

Safety

Örebro is a calm, ordinary Swedish city and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real issues are winter ice on pavements, dark early evenings from November, and the usual late-night bar precautions around Järntorget.
  • Örebro Airport has very few scheduled passenger flights — check the timetable before you build a trip around it.
  • Wadköping's opening hours shorten outside the May–Aug season; check before you walk out there.
  • Winter daylight is short (roughly 6–7 hours in December) and paths can be icy.
  • Card and Swish are accepted almost everywhere; a few small places are cash-free.
