Robertsbridge is a small East Sussex village of roughly 2,500 people on the London–Hastings railway line and the A21. It has almost no sights of its own, but it sits 10 minutes by train from Battle and a short drive from Bodiam Castle, which makes it a quiet, cheaper base for the 1066 Country area rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

Walk the village: it is small, and footpaths and bridleways run into the surrounding countryside. For Bodiam, Brightling and the abbey ruins you need a car, bike or taxi; buses to Bodiam and Hawkhurst leave from the High Street stops but run infrequently. Trains run about twice hourly to Battle (about 10 min) and Hastings (about 30 min).

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village; the practical risks are dark, unlit lanes and footpaths after rain, and no late buses or trains back if you stay out in Hastings.
  • Village services are limited: two small convenience stores, a chemist, baker and florist; stock up before evening.
  • Buses to Bodiam and Hawkhurst are sparse and timetables change; check times at the stop before relying on them.
  • The Seven Stars Inn has been closed since 2016; do not plan around it.
  • The Gray Nicolls factory is a working site, not a museum; ask at reception before looking around.
