Segovia is a UNESCO old town on a 1,005 m plateau 90 km north of Madrid, built around a Roman aqueduct, a Gothic cathedral and a castle. Trains from Madrid take 30 min, so most people come and go in a day. One night buys you the empty evening streets and the Alcázar without queues.

Getting around

The walled old town is pedestrian and walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Bus 9 loops the old town daily every 30 min, 11:00–19:30, fare €1. Bus 11 links Guiomar station to Plaza Artillería under the aqueduct; Bus 12 goes to the bus station. Taxis wait at the plazas below the aqueduct and at Guiomar.

Safety

Segovia is a low-crime, walkable small city; the real risks are pickpockets in the aqueduct and Plaza Mayor crowds, uneven cobbles, and summer heat at altitude. Emergency number 112.
  • Altitude 1,005 (≈ US$1,200) m: summer sun is strong and winter is genuinely cold — pack layers.
  • The Alcázar and cathedral sell timed or last-entry tickets; buy online the day before in high season.
  • Aqueduct-side restaurants are the most expensive in town; walk two streets uphill for better value.
  • Sunday and public-holiday evenings: many kitchens close early.
