Chéticamp is a French-speaking Acadian fishing village of about 4,000 people on the west coast of Cape Breton Island, and the western gate of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The Cabot Trail is the only road in and out. Most travellers pass through in a few hours; the village rewards a night for whale watching, hooked-rug workshops and seafood, and a second night if you want to hike inside the park.

Getting around

Watch out

Safety

A small, safe village; the real risks are wildlife on the Cabot Trail at dawn and dusk, patchy cell coverage in the national park, and cold water on the beaches. 911 works everywhere.
  • The Cabot Trail is the only road in and out; winter closures and fog can add hours.
  • Most restaurants, museums and whale-watching operators shut from late October to mid-May: check before you book a shoulder-season night.
  • Cell coverage is patchy north of the village inside the national park.
  • Moose and deer on the Cabot Trail at dawn and dusk: slow down.
  • A Cape Breton Highlands National Park pass is required to drive through the park; buy at the west gate.
