Puerto Montt is the capital of the Los Lagos region and the working gateway to Chiloé, the Carretera Austral and Argentine Patagonia. It is a port and salmon-processing city first, a holiday town second: most travellers sleep here one night before a ferry or bus, eat seafood at Angelmó, and move on. If you want lakes, volcanoes and a walkable centre, base in Puerto Varas instead and treat Puerto Montt as the airport and bus station.

Safety
- It rains a lot, year-round: bring a waterproof shell, not an umbrella.
- Ferries south to Chaitén run often in summer but can drop to about one a week in winter: check the schedule before you plan around it.
- Buy ferry and long-distance bus tickets in advance in high season; some routes sell out.
- Some Angelmó stalls and informal taxis quote no posted price: ask the total first.
