Olhão is the Algarve's biggest fishing port, 15–20 min by bus or train from Faro. Its draw is the Ria Formosa: cheap ferries to Armona, Culatra and Farol, plus a market and seafood that beat most resort towns. The town itself has no beach and little nightlife, so most travellers use it as a quiet 2–3 night base or a day-trip from Faro.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 min. Buses to Faro run fairly often on weekdays and less at weekends, stopping around 20:00 (about €3.70 one-way). Ferries from the port serve Armona, Culatra and Farol; buy at the kiosk and keep the return time. A car helps for beaches and inland towns; the A22 and EN125 pass the town.

Watch out

Safety

Olhão is a calm, low-crime town; the real risks are sun and sea, not crime. Watch bags in the market and on crowded ferries, and keep to the marked beach areas on the islands.
  • Ferries to the islands stop in the late afternoon: miss the last one and you pay €10–20 (≈ US$12–25) for a private boat.
  • The town has no beach of its own; swimming means a ferry to Armona, Culatra or Farol.
  • Boat tours pack in stops and choose the lunch place; a regular ferry gives you more beach time.
  • Weekend buses to Faro are sparse; check the last departure before an evening out.
