Vichy is a small Allier spa town, one of the European spa towns on the UNESCO list, built up under Napoleon III and later the seat of the 1940–44 French state. The centre is compact and walkable: thermal halls, covered passages, parks and the Allier riverbank. Most travellers see it in a day; the thermal cure is what keeps people for a week.

The centre is a walking zone: rue Montaret, rue de Paris and the covered passages link the shops to Parc des Sources.
