Otumba is a small Pueblos Mágicos town in Mexico State, about an hour by bus from Mexico City's Autobuses del Norte terminal and roughly 30–40 minutes from Teotihuacán. Its draw is a quiet colonial centre, a donkey rescue farm and the Feria del Burro. Two to four hours covers the sights; most travellers see it as a half-day add-on to Teotihuacán rather than a base.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable: plaza, church, both museums and the market sit within about 10 minutes on foot. Burrolandia and the railway museum are in La Estación, roughly a 15–20 minute walk or a short taxi from the plaza. Buses and combis to Texcoco and nearby towns leave from the Av. Miguel Hidalgo / Calle Porfirio Díaz corner.

Watch out

Safety

Otumba is a small, quiet town and the centre is calm in daylight. Use normal Mexico State precautions: daylight travel, licensed taxis or ride apps after dark, and no display of valuables in the market.
  • Buses from Mexico City leave roughly hourly and the last return can be early evening: confirm the last departure when you arrive.
  • The railway museum opens weekends only (Sa–Su 10:00–16:00); a weekday visit means it is closed.
  • Museo Gonzalo Carrasco is closed Mondays.
  • Summer afternoons bring heavy rain; mornings are the safer bet for walking.
  • Bring cash: small museums, Burrolandia and the market are peso-only in practice.
