  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Boston is compact and walkable: most of the colonial core, the waterfront and the North End sit within about 3 miles (5 km). Three nights covers the Freedom Trail, one big museum and a neighborhood evening; four if you add Cambridge or a day trip. Costs run high for hotels, moderate for food and transit. Spring and fall are the best weather; summer is busy and humid, winter is cold with snow.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The T (subway, bus, trolley and ferry) covers the centre and Cambridge; a Charlie Card or contactless tap is the standard way to pay. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile (4 km) walk and is the fastest way between the main sights. Driving and parking in the centre are expensive; use transit and walk.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Cambridge

go

Door to door: About 20–30 min

Red Line to Harvard or Kendall/MIT

Harvard Yard and MIT campus; half a day is enough for a first visit.

Salem

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Commuter rail from North Station

Historic waterfront and museums; busiest in October.

Providence, RI

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Amtrak or commuter rail from South Station

Compact downtown and river walks; easy half-day or full day.

Cape Cod

Door to door: 1.5–2.5 h

Car or bus from South Station

Too far for a comfortable return day in summer traffic.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown and the Waterfront

Closest to the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall and the harbor; best for a first trip with no car.

Back Bay

Newbury Street shopping, Amtrak and commuter rail at Back Bay station; quieter streets, higher room rates.

North End

Italian restaurants and Old North Church; small hotels, some street noise at night.

South End

Restaurants and galleries along Tremont Street; 15–20 min walk or a short ride to Downtown.

Seaport

Newer hotels near the convention center; fewer historic sights, more chain options.

Cambridge

Harvard and MIT; Red Line to Downtown in about 15–20 min. Good value outside graduation and move-in weeks.

Watch out

Safety

Boston is generally safe in the tourist core; the main risks are pickpocketing in crowded areas, late-night bar districts and winter ice on sidewalks. Use normal city caution after dark and keep to lit, busy streets.
  • Hotel prices spike during university graduation (May), move-in (late Aug–early Sep) and marathon weekend (April).
  • Summer afternoons can be humid; carry water on the Freedom Trail.
  • Winter storms can cancel flights and close attractions: check before you travel.
  • Some bars and restaurants add a service or kitchen fee: read the bill before tipping.

  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: Downtown and the Freedom Trail, North End and the waterfront, Back Bay and Beacon Hill, Fenway and the museums.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Freedom Trail sights, Museum of Fine Arts, Fenway Park, USS Constitution) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal and event fixtures (graduation, marathon, move-in) so gates A–D can go green.
