Mildura sits on the Murray in Victoria's north-west, closer to Adelaide (4.5–5 h by road) than to Melbourne (6–7 h). It is a fruit-and-wine town with a working river: paddle steamers, locks, red-gum banks and a food strip on Langtree Avenue. Sights are spread out and buses are thin, so a car changes the trip from one night to three.

Getting around

Mildura is flat and good for cycling, with trails along the river. Local buses run on weekdays in business hours, roughly every 30 minutes between Ransoms and Centro on Deakin Avenue; they are not useful for wineries or Mungo. For most attractions a car is necessary, and the major rental companies operate from the airport. Wentworth is about 30 minutes by car but around 1.5 h by bus.

Watch out

Safety

Mildura is a normal regional city: the real risks are summer heat, long drives on unsealed roads and the fruit-fly rules at the border, not crime. Lock your car at river camps and swim only where locals do.
  • Fruit-fly free zone: you cannot bring fruit or vegetables into the Mildura zone, and fines can reach A$100,000 (≈ US$70,000). Do not carry fruit across the SA or NSW border either.
  • Summer heat: plan walks, river swims and winery visits before 11:00 or after 17:00 in December to February.
  • Do not fish close to the weir at Lock 11.
  • Mungo National Park is about 2 h each way on unsealed roads: check conditions before setting out.
  • Distances are long: Melbourne is 6–7 h by car and the V/Line coach takes about 10 h.
