Cala d'Or is the main resort of the Migjorn de Mallorca region, built from the 1930s around three inlets: Cala Gran in the centre, Cala Egos to the west and Cala Ferrera to the east. The shoreline is mostly rock and cliff with small sand patches at the head of each cove, so the draw is calm swimming water, a walkable centre and easy access to the protected Mondragó coast rather than long beaches. Three to four nights covers the coves, a Mondragó walk and a day in Palma or the fishing village of Portopetro.

Getting around

The centre is walkable and the three coves sit within the built-up area, roughly 10–20 min on foot between them. Bus 521 runs about every 70 min to Portopetro and Cala Mondragó. A car helps for Mondragó, Santanyí and the beaches further afield; parking near the coves fills early in summer.

Watch out

Safety

Cala d'Or is a low-crime resort and safe for families; the real risks are summer heat, rock and cliff shoreline, and swimming where there is no lifeguard. Keep valuables out of sight on the coves and use the marked beach access.
  • Beaches are small and crowded with parasols in Jul–Aug; arrive before 10:00 for a spot.
  • Most of the shoreline is rock or cliff: use the marked access points, not the cliff edges.
  • Many hotels, bars and restaurants close from November to March; check before booking a winter trip.
  • Taxis are limited in high season; book ahead or use the TIB buses.
