Neuquén is the largest city in Argentine Patagonia and the capital of Neuquén Province, on the Limay and Neuquén rivers about 1,150 km southwest of Buenos Aires. It is a modern, fast-growing city rather than a sightseeing destination: the draw is the free museums around Parque Central, the riverside beaches and the Alto's restaurants and craft-beer bars. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Andes or the Atlantic coast, and one night is enough to see the centre.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. City buses need a SUBE card, bought at kiosks for about US$1.50 and also valid in Buenos Aires; a single ride is about US$0.80 and transfers are free. Taxis and remises cost roughly US$2 per km. A cycleway follows the railway from the bus station through Parque Central toward Cipolletti.

Watch out

Safety

Neuquén is a normal, busy Argentine city: watch your bag in the centre and around the bus terminal, and take the usual care at night. The real hazards are the river currents and, in summer, the heat.
  • The Limay has strong currents: swim near the beach and only where lifeguards operate (roughly 1 Dec–15 Mar).
  • Bathing in the Neuquén river is strongly discouraged; Albino Cotro beach has had pollution closures — ask locally.
  • Spring is windy; the valley shelters the city from the worst of the Patagonian plateau winds.
  • Long-distance trains to Bahía Blanca and Buenos Aires have not run since the early 1990s — go by bus or fly.
