Mtskheta was the capital of the old kingdom of Iberia and is where Georgia adopted Christianity in AD 334. It is 15 km north of Tbilisi and small enough to walk in an afternoon. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery are the highlights; Samtavro and the Bebris Tsikhe ruins fill the rest. Most travellers come from Tbilisi and go back the same day.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Jvari Monastery sits on a cliff across the river with no public transport: hire a taxi for the return trip (about 15 lari, check) or take the tourist-office shuttle opposite Svetitskhoveli (about 5 lari per person, check). Walking up means a stretch of main road with blind bends; not advised.

Watch out

Safety

Mtskheta is a small, calm town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the unlit road and cliff at Jvari, loose stones at Bebris Tsikhe, and marshrutka drivers asking more than the set fare.
  • Marshrutka drivers may ask more than the 2 lari fare: pay the exact amount or buy a ticket at the Didube cash desk.
  • Fewer marshrutkas run on Sundays, and they fill up.
  • Jvari has no lighting and no transport after dark: go in clear weather, before dusk.
  • The Bebris Tsikhe ruins are unguarded and loose underfoot.
  • Beginners at the Svetitskhoveli gate ask for money; they are not aggressive.
