  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Kincardine is a Lake Huron beach town of about 11,000 people in Bruce County, built around a sandy shoreline and a Scottish tradition that shows up every Saturday night in summer as a pipe band parade down Queen Street. There is no public bus, so you drive here and you drive around here. Most visitors come for one or two nights between June and early September; outside that window the town is quiet and several attractions are shut.

Watch out

Safety

Kincardine is a small, low-crime town and the main risks are practical: winter driving on Highway 21, cold lake water, and no public transport if you drink. Swim near other people, and never drive after drinking on these rural roads.
  • Winter blowing and drifting snow can close Highway 21; check road conditions and closures before driving.
  • Summer hotels, motels and cottages fill up; book ahead for July and August weekends.
  • Several attractions are seasonal: the lighthouse museum runs July to early September and Walker House Museum is summer only.
  • The pipe band parades on Saturday nights in summer; on Saturdays the Phantom Piper does not play from the lighthouse.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on rural stretches of Highway 21.
