Destination OS · Colonial plaza, seafront, high prices
Malabo
Malabo is a small, expensive island capital: two days cover the cathedral, the Plaza de España and the seafront. Sort the visa, the hotel pickup and the photography rules before you fly, and carry euros or CFA cash.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- Central Africa ↗Sort the visa before the flight: none of the seven countries reliably issues tourist visas on arrival to Western passports, and e-visas here are tied to named airports.
- Central Africa ↗Carry the original yellow fever vaccination certificate in your hand luggage; health desks at every Central African airport ask for it, and a missing card can mean refusal or a jab at the desk.
- Central Africa ↗Before booking anything in or near the DRC, read the WHO Ebola situation page and your own government's health notice: the 2026 outbreak brought quarantine and boarding rules for people who have been in the DRC.
- Equatorial Guinea ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Equatoguinean authorities before booking: the e-visa is valid only for arrival at Malabo, and US passports have needed a visa since 2023.
- Equatorial Guinea ↗Photography in public places has historically required a permit; do not photograph government buildings, the presidential palace, police, military or airports, and ask your hotel about current rules.
- Equatorial Guinea ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead: malaria prevention is needed on Bioko and the mainland, all year.
- Bioko island ↗Photography and travel outside town may need permits: ask your hotel or operator before you set out.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
Malabo is compact but slow to work with. A hotel near the plaza puts the cathedral and the seafront within a short taxi ride, and most stops are outdoors. The trips that go wrong are the unprepared ones: no visa in advance, a camera pointed at a government building, cards that do not work, or a taxi fare agreed too late. Keep the plan short and keep your papers on you.
Fits
- Colonial-era architecture
- Business and diplomatic trips
- Travellers who arrange everything in advance
Does not fit

- Don't confuse
- Malabo is on Bioko island, not on the mainland; Bata and Monte Alén are a separate flight away.
