Fox Glacier is a one-street village on State Highway 6 that exists for its 13 km glacier, the longest in New Zealand, which drops 2,600 m from below Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman to end in rainforest 250 m above sea level. It is quieter than Franz Josef, 30 minutes north, and the road between them crosses a mountain range. Most travellers sleep one night, walk or fly onto the ice, and leave. Two nights buys a weather buffer, which matters because flights and heli-hikes cancel often.

Getting around

The village is walkable; everything else is not. Lake Matheson is a 5-minute drive, the glacier car park about 8 km, Gillespies Beach 11 km down an unsealed road. Fox Tours and Shuttles runs drop-offs to the glacier, Lake Matheson and Gillespies Beach from about $12. No public transport; without a car or a shuttle you are limited to the village and the Minnehaha Walk.

Watch out

Safety

The village is safe; the glacier is not. Barriers at the terminal face exist because ice and rock fall without warning, and two people died crossing them in 2009. The other real risks are weather (tours cancel), unsealed roads after rain, and sandflies.
  • Never cross the barriers at the terminal face. Two visitors were killed by falling ice there in 2009; the ice and rock fall without warning.
  • Access roads close. The Fox Glacier access road (north of Fox River) has been shut by landslide, and Glacier View Road (south of Fox River) has been closed to vehicles — walkable only. Check the DOC page before you set out.
  • Heli-hikes and scenic flights cancel in cloud and rain, often at short notice. Build a spare half-day into the plan or book the first morning slot.
  • Sandflies at Gillespies Beach and along the river are severe. Bring repellent.
  • Fuel up here or in Franz Josef; the next reliable station south is Haast, about 1.5 h away.
  • Winter rooms in the cheaper lodges can be cold — ask about heating before booking.
