Skip as a base: Nieuwegein is a Utrecht suburb with no train station. Come only for the Vreeswijk locks, or sleep here if Utrecht beds are full.
Nieuwegein is a planned city of about 68,000 people, built from 1971 around the older villages of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk, roughly 5 km south of Utrecht and just north of the Lek. It has no train station, so almost everyone arrives by tram or bus from Utrecht Centraal. The old Vreeswijk harbour, the Oudegein park and windmill, and a handful of activity venues are the reasons to come; most travellers see it as a half-day from Utrecht rather than a place to sleep.

- Buses from Utrecht Centraal serve different Nieuwegein routes — check the destination board.
- Motorway exits named Nieuwegein sit on three different roads (A2, A12, A27); know which one your hotel is near.
- Rush hour on the A2, A12 and A27 is slow; allow extra time if driving.
