Montpelier is the smallest state capital in the United States, with about 8,000 residents and a compact downtown you can cross on foot in 15 minutes. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop on the Amtrak Vermonter or a base for central Vermont: Barre's granite quarries, Stowe and the Waterbury food stops are all under an hour by car. Two nights is the practical maximum unless you are here for foliage season or the legislature.

Getting around

Walk. Downtown, the State House and the farmers market sit within about 15 minutes on foot, and drivers stop at the crosswalks. Green Mountain Transit runs local buses, with a seasonal Capital Shuttle; a car is needed for Barre, Stowe, Waterbury and the sugar houses. Amtrak's Vermonter stops at Montpelier Junction, about 1.5 mi (2.4 km) from downtown, with no sidewalk for part of the walk: arrange a taxi or ride pick-up.

Safety

Very safe for a US capital: the real risks are winter ice, spring downtown flooding and unlit roads at the town edge. Walk the centre, drive after dark.
  • Downtown flooding is more frequent in early spring: shops and roads can close for a few days.
  • The Amtrak station is 1.5 mi from downtown with gaps in the sidewalk; do not plan to walk it with luggage after dark.
  • Winter ice on pavements and steps; bring traction soles Dec–Mar.
  • Small-town hours: many restaurants close early and some shut on Sun–Mon.
