Peebles is a small market town in the Scottish Borders, 23 miles south of Edinburgh on the A703, with a population of about 9,000. It is a base for Traquair House, the Tweed valley and forest trails rather than a sight-heavy town. Most visitors come for a day from Edinburgh or as one stop on a Borders loop, and a car makes the outlying gardens and castles far easier.

Getting around

The town centre is small and walkable. Borders Bus X62 runs hourly from Edinburgh via Penicuik and Eddleston, about 75 min, and continues east along the Tweed valley to Galashiels and Melrose. For Traquair, Kailzie, Dawyck or the hill trails you need your own wheels or a taxi; there is a taxi rank by the Eastgate bus stop.

Watch out

Safety

Peebles is a quiet, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are weather and terrain: hill paths turn boggy, daylight is short in winter, and rural roads have poor mobile coverage.
  • Tweeddale Museum and Gallery in the Chambers Institution is closed for rebuilding until 2028; check before you plan around it.
  • Traquair House, Kailzie Gardens and Dawyck Botanic Garden keep seasonal hours and close outside their open months: check each official site.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G in the town centre but there are dead spots on the surrounding roads; download maps before you drive.
  • Rural roads are single-track in places with passing places; drive on the left and allow more time than the distance suggests.
