Burnley is a former cotton town in east Lancashire, 30 miles north of Manchester, with a compact centre, a canal towpath, two textile-era houses worth an afternoon and a Premier League-sized football ground. Most visitors come for a match, for family, or as a cheap stop between Manchester and the Yorkshire mill towns. The moors and the Singing Ringing Tree are the reason to add a second night.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Local buses run from the central bus station to the estates and to Towneley; the X43 Witchway goes to Manchester every 20 min in the daytime. Taxis are cheap for the station-to-hotel hop. The canal towpath is the one good cycling route.

Safety

The centre is fine at night; the real issues are drinkers around closing time, poorly lit station approaches, and a few outlying estates (Burnley Wood, Stoops, Stoneyholme) with no visitor reason to go.
  • Two stations, Burnley Manchester Road and Burnley Central, are on different lines: check which one your train uses before booking a hotel.
  • Burnley Central is a quarter mile from the centre on a retail park and is bleak after dark.
  • The last train from Manchester Victoria leaves around 23:00: miss it and you're on a £60 (≈ US$80)+ taxi.
  • Match days fill every hotel and pub in town: book weeks ahead or avoid the date.
  • Some town-centre bars have no posted prices: ask the total before you order.
