Breckenridge is a former mining town at 2,926 m (9,600 ft) on Highway 9, about 104 mi (167 km) west of Denver. It is a ski resort first and a summer hiking and biking base second. The historic core is compact and walkable, the ski area sits directly above it, and free town and county buses mean you can leave the car parked. Altitude is the main thing that changes plans: give yourself a day to adjust before you ski or hike hard.

Getting around

Breckenridge Free Ride runs free town buses linking the free car parks, the gondola, the Village, Peak 9 and Four O'Clock Road. Summit Stage covers the rest of Summit County free of charge, including Frisco and Silverthorne. The Breck Connect gondola links town to Peaks 7 and 8 in the ski season. A car helps for Lake Dillon, Hoosier Pass and wine-country day trips; check schedules on the operator sites as they change by season.

Breckenridge is a low-crime resort town; the real risks are altitude sickness, winter road conditions and skiing beyond your level. Lock your gear, and tell someone your route before a backcountry day.
  • Altitude: the town sits near 2,926 m. Expect headaches and poor sleep for a day; drink water, skip alcohol on night one, and see a doctor about symptoms that worsen.
  • Winter driving: I-70 and Highway 9 close or slow in storms. Carry chains or traction gear when required and check Colorado road conditions before you leave Denver.
  • Mud season: April–May and late October–November shut lifts and many restaurants; confirm what is open before booking.
  • Ski and bike rentals: book online ahead in peak weeks; on-mountain shops often store gear overnight so you do not carry it back to your lodging.
  • Sun and cold: UV is strong at this elevation even in winter; wind chill on the upper mountain is far colder than in town.
