Stay 1 night in Liberia town only if you land late or leave early; otherwise sleep at the beach and use LIR airport as your gateway.
Liberia is Guanacaste's provincial capital and the airport gateway to the Pacific beaches, not a destination in itself. The town is walkable and cheap for a night, with a colonial-era centre, a cowboy museum and sodas around the plaza. Most travellers land at LIR, spend one night or none, then move to Playas del Coco, Tamarindo or the Papagayo resorts. Rincon de la Vieja volcano is the one real day trip from here.
