Oia is the northernmost village on Thira, about 200 km south of the mainland, and the picture most people carry of Santorini: white houses on a volcanic cliff, blue-domed churches and windmills. It is small — you can walk it in 20–30 minutes — and it is almost entirely accommodation, restaurants and shops. Come for the sunset and the caldera path; sleep here only if the view is the point of the trip.

Getting around

Motor vehicles are banned inside the village; everything is on foot, and luggage moves by donkey or porter. Walking end to end takes 20–30 minutes. KTEL Santorini buses link Oia with Fira roughly hourly, cash only. The caldera footpath to Fira is 11 km and about 3 hours at a moderate pace; Fira to Oia is the easier direction because the climb is gentler.

Watch out

Safety

Oia is a safe, walkable village; the real risks are cliff stairs without railings, summer crowds at sunset and heat in Jul–Aug. Petty theft is rare but keep bags zipped in the crush.
  • Sunset in Jul–Aug: the castle and the main path are packed; arrive 60–90 min early or watch from Amoudi Bay instead.
  • Cliff stairs are steep and uneven, with no railings in places; wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops.
  • Tap water is of marginal quality; drink bottled water.
  • Buses are cash-only and fill up at sunset; have coins and a plan B.
  • Most restaurants and hotels close from November to March: check before booking winter.
