FrankfurtFrankfurt am Main

Give Frankfurt 2 nights: one for the Museumsufer and Römerberg, one for Sachsenhausen cider taverns; add a third only for a Rhine or Heidelberg day trip.

Frankfurt is Germany's finance and transport hub: a skyscraper skyline over a rebuilt old town, the Main river museums, and Germany's busiest airport 20 minutes out. Most travellers pass through; two nights covers the centre and Sachsenhausen without rushing, and the Rhine-Main region opens up as day trips. Trade-fair weeks double hotel prices, so check the fair calendar before booking.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

RMV U-Bahn, tram and bus cover the centre; S-Bahn lines reach the airport, Mainz, Wiesbaden and Darmstadt. Buy a ticket before boarding from a machine. Central Frankfurt is one fare zone: single trip about €3.80, day ticket about €7.75 (2026 estimate). S-Bahn runs are often 5–15 min late in the morning peak.

Watch out

Safety

Frankfurt is a safe big city by day and on the main transport lines. Watch bags at Hauptbahnhof and on the S-Bahn, avoid the Bahnhofsviertel red-light streets late at night, and expect pickpockets at the Book Fair and Christmas market crowds.
  • Trade fairs (Book Fair mid-October, spring shows) fill hotels and raise rates: book early or shift dates.
  • S-Bahn delays of 5–15 min are common at peak; allow 30 min extra before a flight.
  • Buy your ticket before boarding: inspectors fine on the spot.
  • Bahnhofsviertel has a red-light district and open drug use on some streets; it is not dangerous but not for families at night.
