Kuujjuaq is the largest community in Nunavik and its air hub, on the Koksoak River about 50 km from Ungava Bay. There are no roads in: everything arrives by plane. The village itself is small — a day covers it — so come for the river, the tundra edge, caribou season and Inuit culture, not for a checklist of sights.

The village is small enough to walk in summer. In winter and for luggage, use Ookpik Taxi or the local taxi firms; rental 4x4s, SUVs and vans are available from Tivi (pick-up at the airport). No roads leave the community.

Watch out

Safety

Kuujjuaq is a small, safe community, but the environment is the risk: cold, fast weather changes, mosquitoes and no road out. Tell someone your plans before going on the land, and never travel the river or tundra alone.
  • No road access: the only way in or out is by air, so weather delays are real.
  • Summer weather swings between sun, wind, rain and even snow — pack layers, a hat, sunglasses and insect repellent.
  • Mosquitoes are severe in June and July.
  • Snow can arrive from mid-September; winter blizzards build in hours.
  • Inuktitut is widely spoken and some older residents speak little English or French — keep requests simple.
  • Food and groceries are expensive; stock up at the Northern Store before heading out.
