Dénia is a working Spanish coastal town of about 44,000 people, halfway between Alicante and Valencia, where the castle, the fishing port and 26 km of beaches sit within walking distance of each other. It is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, known for red prawns and rice dishes, and it works best as a two-night stop on the Costa Blanca rather than a week-long resort base.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; DeniBus runs five routes (single fare €1.50, pay the driver) from the Esplanade Cervantes. TRAM Alicante light rail links the coast south to Alicante in about 2 h 30 min. A car helps for Montgó and Les Rotes.

Safety

Dénia is a low-risk town; the real issues are summer heat, sea currents at the rocky coves and pickpockets around the port in August. The 112 line covers police, fire and ambulance.
  • Summer daytime heat: plan the castle and old town before 11:00 or after 18:00.
  • Diving and snorkelling at El Trampolí, La Punta Negra and La Cala need a permit from the tourist office.
  • Ferry and TRAM timetables change by season: check before you build a day around them.
  • Restaurants in the port area can be busy and uneven in July and August: book or walk one street inland.
