- Southeast Asia ↗Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Brunei and Myanmar; never carry a bag or parcel for anyone.
- Southeast Asia ↗Carry a passport valid for at least six months from entry with two blank pages; airlines refuse boarding on less.
- Malaysia ↗Most foreign visitors must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online shortly before arrival; use only the official immigration site.
- Malaysia ↗Remove shoes before entering mosques, temples and homes; cover shoulders and knees, and use the robes on loan at major mosques.
- Malaysia ↗Cards and e-wallets are common in cities; keep some ringgit in small notes for hawker stalls, taxis and tolls.
Langkawi is a 99-island archipelago in the Andaman Sea, 30 km off the Kedah coast, and it is duty-free: alcohol and chocolate cost less here than anywhere else in Malaysia. There is effectively no public transport, so your trip is shaped by whether you rent a car or scooter. Beaches and mangroves are the point; the cable car and Sky Bridge are the one sight worth queueing for.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
There is effectively no public transport. Taxis and Grab run on fixed prices (airport to Pantai Cenang about RM20 with Grab, Kuah Jetty to Kuah town about RM8). Renting a car (RM70–150/day for an air-conditioned sedan) or a scooter (RM40–45/day for 150cc, RM25/day for older 115cc semi-automatics) is the practical choice. Rent from a licensed shop at the airport, the port complex or Pantai Cenang, not from touts. Fuel is cheap and government-fixed: about RM50 to fill an empty saloon, about RM5 for a bike. You pay first at the pump and claim back any unused amount at the counter.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: About 1.5–2 h including check-in
Speedboat or ferry from Kuah Jetty or Telaga Terminal; several operators
Check-in closes 1 h before departure; bring your passport and expect Thai entry formalities.
Kuala Kedah (mainland Kedah)
goDoor to door: About 1 h 45 min crossing
Fast ferry from Kuah Jetty
The mainland link for Alor Setar and the railway; the ferry is heavily air-conditioned, so bring a layer.
Kuala Perlis
goDoor to door: About 1 h crossing
Fast ferry from Kuah Jetty
Useful if you are heading to Thailand by train via Padang Besar.
Satun, Thailand
goDoor to door: About 1 h 15 min crossing
Ferry from Kuah to Tammalang pier
One departure a day each way; check the current timetable before you plan around it.

Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Pantai Cenang
The default base: beachfront bars, restaurants, rental shops and the airport 20 min away. Busiest and cheapest beds.
Pantai Tengah
One beach south of Cenang, quieter, family resorts; walkable to Cenang in about 20 min.
Kuah
The island capital and ferry port; duty-free shops and local food, but no beach. Use it for one night before an early ferry.
Pantai Kok / Telaga Harbour
Near the cable car and Telaga Tujuh; quiet, car needed for everything.
Tanjung Rhu and Datai
Northern tip; resort-only stretch, limestone crags and mangroves. High-end and isolated.

Watch out
Safety
- Scooter accidents are common; most rental agencies leave you liable for up to RM3000 (≈ US$750) of damage, and the island hospital cannot treat head injuries — a medivac to Penang takes 45 min or more.
- Helmets and seat belts are mandatory; fines start around RM50. Carry your licence (English text is enough; an international permit is not required).
- Drive on the left, slowly: children, chickens, cows and buffaloes cross the road, and cattle and snakes lie on the warm blacktop at night.
- The SkyCab does not run in bad weather or on maintenance days — check before you go, and expect queues of up to 2 hours at peak times.
- Petrol stations are far apart; check your fuel before long drives.
- Tanjung Rhu beach is partly claimed by two resorts whose guards turn non-guests away.

Coming as the guide grows
- Airport-to-bed contract for LGK: taxi and Grab fare bands, rental desks, and the last sensible arrival hour.
- Four walking or driving clusters with anchors: Pantai Cenang and Tengah, Pantai Kok and the cable car, Kuah and Eagle Square, Tanjung Rhu and the north.
- Place pages with verified cutoffs (SkyCab and Sky Bridge, Telaga Tujuh, Underwater World, Galeria Perdana) and eat pages with last orders.
- Ferry and weather fixtures so the island-hopping and Ko Lipe routes can go green or red on the day.
