Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town of about 27,000 people on the River Avon, and the birthplace of William Shakespeare. The five Shakespeare Birthplace Trust houses, Holy Trinity Church and the Royal Shakespeare Company theatres sit within a walkable centre. Most visitors need one full day for the sights and a second evening for a play; the town is small enough that two nights is generous.

The centre is compact and walkable; most sights are within 15 minutes on foot. Anne Hathaway's Cottage is about 1 mile (1.6 km) west in Shottery and Mary Arden's Farm about 3 miles (5 km) west in Wilmcote — use the open-top bus tour, a bike, or the hourly train to Wilmcote. Stratford-upon-Avon station is half a mile west of the centre; do not get off at Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway, which is 3 km out.
