Caerphilly is a small town 15 minutes by train from Cardiff, built around the biggest castle in Wales and a moat with leaning towers. The castle and the town centre fill half a day; the rest of the trip is Cardiff, Castell Coch or walks on Caerphilly Mountain. Most travellers come as a day trip and sleep in Cardiff, where the choice of beds is far wider.

The centre is walkable: station to castle is about 10 min on foot. Trains run to Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central roughly every 15–30 min; buses (including the 26 from Cardiff) stop near Castell Coch at Tongwynlais. A car helps for the mountain and the valleys.
