Banff is a small fishing port on the west bank of the River Deveron, facing Macduff across the water; together they hold about 8,000 people. The draw is Duff House, a William Adam mansion run by the National Galleries of Scotland, plus a working harbour and a low-key stretch of coast. It is not Banff, Alberta, and there is no railway: you arrive by bus or car from Aberdeen, about two hours.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town. The real risks are coastal weather, unlit harbour edges after dark and thin bus services: check the last bus before you go out for the evening.
  • No railway station: Banff lost its line in 1964. Huntly and Keith are the nearest stations but have no useful onward bus, so most people come by bus or car.
  • Macduff Marine Aquarium is closed until July 2026: check before you plan around it.
  • Many cafés, museums and attractions run short seasonal hours outside summer; check the day before.
  • Coastal weather changes fast: wind and rain even in July.
