Stay one night only if you want Mount Taranaki's eastern trails; otherwise pass through on SH3 between New Plymouth (40 min) and Hāwera (25–30 min).

Stratford is a small inland Taranaki town of about 5,700 people on the Patea River, sitting under the eastern flank of Mount Taranaki. It is a service town with Shakespeare-named streets, a glockenspiel clock tower, a pioneer village and quick access to the mountain's eastern tracks and the Forgotten World Highway. Most travellers use it as a half-day stop or a single night between New Plymouth and Hāwera.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk. There is no local bus network or taxi rank. A weekday Connector bus links New Plymouth, Stratford and Hāwera, and also serves Taranaki Base Hospital; the stop is outside the i-Site. A car is needed for the mountain, the pioneer village and SH43.

Watch out

Safety

Stratford is a quiet, low-crime town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are mountain weather, SH3 and SH43 driving, and having no taxi or evening bus if you go out late.
  • No taxis or town buses: plan around the weekday Connector or drive.
  • Mount Taranaki weather changes fast; carry rain gear and check the forecast before any track.
  • SH43 (Forgotten World Highway) is narrow with unsealed sections and one-lane bridges: fuel up in Stratford.
  • Many shops and cafés close early; the supermarket is the reliable option for food.
