Kilmallock is a small County Limerick town (about 1,760 people) with a medieval abbey, a town-wall gate and a collegiate church, all free to walk around. The real draw is Lough Gur, 10 km north, with a Bronze Age shield replica, ring forts, a wedge tomb and a stone circle. Without a car the town is hard to use as a base: bus 329 from Limerick runs every two hours Monday to Saturday and roughly every three hours on Sunday, and the railway station is closed.

Getting around

You need wheels. Bus 329 links Limerick Colbert with Bruff, Kilmallock and Kilfinane, roughly every two hours Monday to Saturday and every three hours on Sunday, about an hour end to end. The railway station is closed, so Dublin–Cork trains pass through without stopping; the nearest station is Charleville, 8 km south-west. A bike works well for the flat lanes to Lough Gur and the Ballyhoura trailhead.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are narrow unlit lanes, farm traffic, wet stone steps at the ruins and long waits if you miss the last bus 329.
  • Bus 329 is the only public transport and the last useful departure is in the late afternoon: check the current timetable before you rely on it.
  • Lough Gur's visitor centre keeps seasonal hours and the castle ruin is fenced: check before travelling.
  • Castle Oliver is a private residence and not open to the public.
  • Country lanes are narrow, unlit and used by farm machinery and cyclists: drive slowly and expect walkers on bends.
  • Some listed food and sleep businesses close or change hands; confirm by phone before booking.
