Chippenham is a Wiltshire market town of about 37,000 people on the Great Western mainline, halfway between Bath and Swindon. Trains reach London Paddington in roughly 1 h 15 min and Bath in about 15 min, so it works as a cheaper bed for the Lacock, Castle Combe and Corsham cluster. The town centre is small and mostly functional; the value is the villages and manor houses around it.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 min end to end. Buses run to Bath (231/232 via Corsham), Frome (234) and Swindon (55 via Calne). National Cycle Route 403 passes through town toward Marlborough. For Lacock, Castle Combe and Bowood you need a bus, a bike or a car; taxis are limited, so book returns in advance.
