Bahía de Kino is a two-part fishing and beach town about 100 km west of Hermosillo: Kino Viejo, the old village with the simple seafood places and basic shopping, and Kino Nuevo, a mile of beachfront villas and low-rise condos where most visitors stay. It is a winter base for American and Canadian retirees and a summer escape for Hermosillo families. Two nights covers the beach, the Seri museum and a boat or kayak morning; three if you add Punta Chueca or the estuary.

Getting around

The local bus runs roughly hourly in each direction from sunrise to sunset. Many streets are unpaved, so a car makes the old town, the estuary and Punta Chueca far easier. Taxis cover short hops in town.

Watch out

Safety

Kino Nuevo is comfortable and calm, and the main risks are heat, unlit unpaved streets at night and holiday-week price spikes rather than crime.
  • Holiday weeks (Mexican and US) fill the good rooms and push prices up: book ahead.
  • Tap water is treated but very saline; most people drink bottled water.
  • Local ice is made from local water: sensitive stomachs should ask for drinks without ice.
  • December–February north winds make the beach feel cold even in sun.
  • July–September is hot and humid: an air-conditioned room is not optional.
