Meteora is a cluster of sandstone pillars above Kalambaka and Kastraki in northwestern Thessaly, with six working monasteries on top, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. One day covers four or five monasteries by car, taxi or the local bus; two nights is only needed if you want to enter all six, because each closes one day a week on staggered days. The rail line from Palaiofarsalos was knocked out in 2023 and is expected back in 2026, so most travellers arrive by bus or car.

Getting around

Roads between the monasteries are good and signposted, with free lay-bys and parking. The local Kalambaka–Meteora bus runs a few times a day to Kastraki and the monasteries (about €2 one way, €5.50 all-day; timetables are not published online, ask at the bus station). Taxis wait at Kalambaka station and will string the monasteries together for a fixed price. Guided half-day tours from Kalambaka cost roughly €22–35 before monastery entry; few guides are licensed to go inside. On foot, Great Meteoron and Varlaam are 10 min apart, Holy Trinity and St. Stephen 15 min, and St. Nikolaos is a 10-min road walk from Kastraki.

Kalambaka

Under the rocks, with the bus station, the widest choice of hotels, tavernas and shops; best if you arrive without a car. The train station is there too, but rail service from Palaiofarsalos is closed and only expected to reopen in 2026.

Kastraki

Smaller village 1 km closer to the monasteries; quieter, with rock views and trailheads on the doorstep.

Watch out

Safety

Meteora is a safe, low-crime rural area. The real risks are heat and dehydration on the trails in summer, steep unguarded steps at the monasteries, and snow or ice on the roads in winter.
  • Thessaly rail to Kalambaka has been closed since 2023 storm damage and is expected to reopen in 2026: check before booking.
  • Each monastery closes one day a week in summer and more often in winter, on staggered days: no single day opens all six.
  • Dress code is enforced: men in trousers covering the knees, women in skirts or sarongs with shoulders covered; loan skirts are available at the entrance.
  • Except St. Stephen, every monastery is reached by hundreds of steep steps; the small cable cars are for supplies, not visitors.
  • Photography and video are banned inside the inner church sanctuaries.
  • Large tour groups fill the chapels from mid-morning: go at 09:00 opening.
