Shawnee is a mid-sized Oklahoma town on I-40, about 35 minutes east of Oklahoma City, with a small walkable downtown, three worthwhile museums and several Native American casinos on its edges. It is spread out and car-dependent, so most travellers use it as a single overnight between Oklahoma City and Tulsa or as a half-day stop. Two nights is the ceiling unless you are visiting family.

Getting around

A car is close to essential: the town is spread over several kilometres and pavements are patchy. Rent at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City or from the Enterprise office in Shawnee. Taxis and rideshare exist but are thin, especially late; there is no useful local bus for visitors.

Safety

Shawnee is a normal mid-sized US town: the real risks are summer heat, severe-weather days and long unlit walks between the interstate and downtown. Drive after dark, keep valuables out of sight in the car, and check the weather before any storm-season drive.
