Chambéry

Give Chambéry one night, two at most: a compact old town, a castle and a Saturday market, with Lac du Bourget and the Bauges as the real draw.

Chambéry is the historic capital of Savoie, a small Alpine city in a valley between the Bauges and Chartreuse ranges, 10 km south of Lac du Bourget. The old town is walkable in half a day; the reason to stay longer is the lake, the vineyards and the mountain trailheads on the doorstep. It works as a rail stop between Lyon and the ski valleys, or as a low-cost base for Aix-les-Bains and the Bauges.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • France and Monaco ↗France has run temporary identity checks at its internal Schengen land borders since 2015; carry a passport or EU/EEA national ID on trains and buses from Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
  • France and Monaco ↗Nights in France and Monaco draw on the same Schengen 90-in-180-day allowance as the rest of the area; Monaco does not reset or pause it.
  • France ↗France is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • France ↗TGV (including the low-cost Ouigo) and Intercités night trains need a seat reservation: a rail pass alone does not let you board.
  • France ↗Paris, Lyon and other large cities run low-emission zones that require a Crit'Air sticker on cars; check before you drive a hire car or your own car into a city.
  • France ↗Carry your passport or national ID card: police can ask for identification, and hotels register foreign guests.

Getting around

The centre is flat and compact: castle, cathedral, Place Saint-Léger and the elephants fountain are all within a 15-minute walk. Local buses cover the suburbs and the lake; the Vélostation in front of the station rents bikes (about €3 half day, €5 full day). Marked cycle routes run north to Lac du Bourget and south into the vineyards.

Aix-les-Bains

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Train from Chambéry-Challes-les-Eaux, about 15 min, or bus along the lake

Spa town on Lac du Bourget; pair it with a swim or a lake cruise in summer.

Lac du Bourget

go

Door to door: About 30 min by bike to the south shore

Cycle route north from the centre, or bus toward Aix-les-Bains

France's largest natural lake; the south shore is the closest and quietest access.

Bauges massif (La Féclaz)

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Car or seasonal bus from Chambéry

Hiking in summer, cross-country skiing in winter; check snow and bus conditions.

Modane and the Maurienne

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train east along the Maurienne line

Rail services toward Italy have been disrupted by tunnel work; check before relying on the connection.

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep in the valley.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town (Vieille Ville)

Between the castle and Place Saint-Léger; walk to everything, but parking is tight and some streets are pedestrian-only.

Around the station (Challes-les-Eaux)

500 m north of the centre; best for one-night rail stops and early departures. Budget chains cluster on Avenue Alsace-Lorraine.

Lac du Bourget / Aix-les-Bains side

10–15 km (6.2–9.3 mi) north; pick this for swimming, cycling and lake views rather than city sightseeing.

Watch out

Safety

Chambéry is a calm, low-risk city; the real hazards are Alpine weather, mountain trails and summer heat, not crime. Normal city care applies after dark around the station.
  • Chambéry-Savoie airport (CMF) is seasonal: outside winter there may be no scheduled flights — check before booking.
  • The Fréjus rail tunnel route toward Turin and Milan has been disrupted by landslides and engineering work; check the current status before planning an Italy leg.
  • Saturday market crowds and the covered market area get tight; go before 10:00 if you want to move freely.
  • Summer valley heat: the old town traps warmth, and many small shops close for a long lunch and on Sunday.
