Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Kilmallock is a small County Limerick town (about 1,760 people) with a medieval abbey, a town-wall gate and a collegiate church, all free to walk around. The real draw is Lough Gur, 10 km north, with a Bronze Age shield replica, ring forts, a wedge tomb and a stone circle. Without a car the town is hard to use as a base: bus 329 from Limerick runs every two hours Monday to Saturday and roughly every three hours on Sunday, and the railway station is closed.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need wheels. Bus 329 links Limerick Colbert with Bruff, Kilmallock and Kilfinane, roughly every two hours Monday to Saturday and every three hours on Sunday, about an hour end to end. The railway station is closed, so Dublin–Cork trains pass through without stopping; the nearest station is Charleville, 8 km south-west. A bike works well for the flat lanes to Lough Gur and the Ballyhoura trailhead.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Lough Gur

go

Door to door: About 20 min by car

Drive R512 north then local lanes, about 10 km; or bike the same route

The main reason to come. Visitor centre on the east bank, then walk to the ring forts and the wedge tomb; Grange stone circle is 300 m west of the lake.

Limerick

go

Door to door: About 1 h by bus

Bus 329 from the town centre, about 1 h; or drive N20/M20, about 35 min

King John's Castle, the Hunt Museum and the milk market; the city is the practical base for this area.

Bruff

go

Door to door: About 20–25 min

Bus 329 north, about 20 min; or drive R512

Small town with pubs and takeaways; useful if Kilmallock's kitchens are shut.

Galbally and the Glen of Aherlow

go

Door to door: About 40 min to Galbally

Drive east on local roads via Galbally, then into County Tipperary

Ruined 13th-century Franciscan friary at Galbally, then the Glen of Aherlow descends east towards Tipperary town.

Ardpatrick and Ballyhoura trails

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Drive R512 south-west to the trailhead at Ardpatrick

Monastery and round tower remains, a hill view, and off-road bike hire at the Ballyhoura trailhead; trails cross into County Cork.

Charleville, County Cork

caution

Door to door: About 15 min by car

Drive 8 km south-west; trains to Dublin and Cork

Only useful if you are connecting by rail; there is little else for a visitor.

Cork city

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive N20 south, about 1 h 15 min; or train from Charleville

Too far for a comfortable return day with sightseeing; sleep in Cork instead.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Kilmallock town centre

Walk to the abbey, Blossom Gate and pubs; Deebert House and Fitzgeralds are both here.

Bruff

10 km north on the R512 and on the same bus 329 route; a second small base with pubs and takeaways.

Limerick city

Best base if you have no car: more beds, later buses and trains, and Kilmallock is a day trip.

Charleville, County Cork

8 km south-west and the nearest open railway station, on the Dublin–Cork line.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are narrow unlit lanes, farm traffic, wet stone steps at the ruins and long waits if you miss the last bus 329.
  • Bus 329 is the only public transport and the last useful departure is in the late afternoon: check the current timetable before you rely on it.
  • Lough Gur's visitor centre keeps seasonal hours and the castle ruin is fenced: check before travelling.
  • Castle Oliver is a private residence and not open to the public.
  • Country lanes are narrow, unlit and used by farm machinery and cyclists: drive slowly and expect walkers on bends.
  • Some listed food and sleep businesses close or change hands; confirm by phone before booking.
