Leeds is the biggest city in West Yorkshire and the UK's largest financial centre outside London, with a compact, walkable centre: Victorian arcades and the Corn Exchange for shopping, the Royal Armouries and the city art gallery for free culture, and one of the country's best nightlife scenes. Two nights covers the centre; add a third for the Yorkshire Dales or a nearby town. It is a working city rather than a pretty one, and the weather is wetter and cooler than the south.

Getting around

The centre is compact and best walked: the station, Briggate, the markets, the Royal Armouries and the universities are all within about 30 minutes on foot. CityBus route 5 loops the centre every 6–7 minutes, £1 a ride. Buses run frequently on most routes; a FirstDay ticket covers unlimited First buses in Leeds. Suburban trains reach Headingley. Taxis: black-and-white cabs can be flagged down, others must be booked.

Safety

Leeds is a normal, busy UK city and safe for visitors by day; at night stick to lit streets around Briggate and Call Lane, watch your phone and bag in crowded bars, and avoid walking alone through the less-lit edges of the centre after closing time.
  • Rain is common year-round: carry a waterproof rather than an umbrella.
  • Some city-centre bars and clubs have door charges or strict dress codes at weekends.
  • Match days (Leeds United at Elland Road, cricket at Headingley) fill trains and pubs: check fixtures before booking.
  • Leeds Bradford Airport has no rail link and the A1 Flyer bus can be slow in traffic.
