Enterprise

Give Enterprise one night as a highway stop for the Hay River falls, or skip it: the hamlet burned in 2023 and has almost no beds.

Enterprise is a junction hamlet of about 75 people on the Mackenzie Highway, 38 km south of Hay River and 84 km north of the Alberta border. Every vehicle between Alberta and Yellowknife or Hay River passes through. Its pull is the Twin Falls Gorge waterfalls 9–10 km south, not the settlement itself, which was destroyed by wildfire in August 2023 and is still rebuilding.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Watch out

Safety

The main risks are wildfire season (the hamlet burned in August 2023), long fuel gaps and winter cold near −30 °C (−22 °F). Carry water, fuel and offline maps; 911 works where there is signal.
  • The hamlet was destroyed by wildfire in August 2023; services and lodging are limited while it rebuilds — check before you arrive.
  • Fuel and food gaps are long on this highway: fill up in Hay River or High Level.
  • Winter highs sit near −20 °C (−4 °F) and lows near −31 °C (−24 °F); summer is short and buggy.
  • No cell coverage in stretches of the highway; carry water, a spare tyre and offline maps.
