Vlorë is Albania's second port and the northern gateway to the Riviera, 135 km from Tirana by a good road. The old centre sits about 2 km inland from the port, joined by a palm-lined boulevard; the beaches run south of the port. Two nights covers the town and one nearby sight; most travellers use it as a stop before Sarandë or Himarë.

Getting around

The centre and the port are linked by one long boulevard — walkable in about 25–30 min, or a short taxi. Buses and furgons to Sarandë, Berat and Gjirokastër line up on the main road near the historical museum rather than at a proper station. Local buses and taxis cover the beach strip; a car helps for Kanina, Zvërnec and Orikum.

Watch out

Safety

Generally safe for tourists; the usual care with late-night bars and unposted prices. Main risks are summer heat, traffic on the coastal road and swimming where there are no lifeguards.
  • Buses and furgons leave from the roadside, not a terminal: confirm the departure point and time the day before.
  • The town beach near the port is not the best swimming; walk or ride south along the Lungomare.
  • Avoid political talk about 1997; it is still a raw subject locally.
  • Summer heat and traffic peak in July–August; book beds ahead.
