Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Naples is Italy's third-largest city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Europe, a UNESCO-listed historic centre of Greek, Roman, Norman and Spanish layers. It works as a base for Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Capri, Ischia and the Amalfi Coast, so most travellers sleep here and day-trip out rather than the reverse. The centre is walkable and cheap by Italian big-city standards; the friction is traffic, taxi pricing and summer heat.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk the centre: Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali are 10–15 min apart on foot. Metro Line 1 links the station, Museo, Toledo and Vanvitelli; Line 2 and the Circumvesuviana run from Garibaldi to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento. Funiculars climb to Vomero. Buses and trams fill the gaps but are slow in traffic. Taxis are licensed or not: agree the fixed fare or meter before you get in.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Pompeii

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, about 35–40 min

Go at opening; the site is large and shadeless by midday.

Herculaneum

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Circumvesuviana to Ercolano Scavi, about 20 min, then a 10-min walk downhill

Smaller and better preserved than Pompeii; pairs well with Vesuvius.

Capri

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Ferry or hydrofoil from Molo Beverello, 45–80 min depending on boat

Book the first boat out; day-tripper crowds peak 11:00–15:00.

Sorrento

go

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Circumvesuviana from Garibaldi, about 65–75 min

Easy half-day; the coastal bus onward to Positano is slow in summer.

Procida

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Ferry from Molo Beverello or Pozzuoli, 30–60 min

Quieter than Capri; check the return sailing before you leave.

Pozzuoli

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Cumana railway from Montesanto, about 20 min

Roman amphitheatre and the Campi Flegrei; a low-key half-day.

Afragola

skip

Door to door: About 30–40 min from the centre

High-speed trains call at Napoli Afragola, 12 km north of the centre

A rail interchange, not a destination; useful only if your train bypasses Napoli Centrale.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro Storico

Spaccanapoli, Via dei Tribunali, Duomo; walkable to everything, noisy at night, few lifts in old buildings.

Chiaia and San Ferdinando

Waterfront, Via Partenope, Royal Palace; quieter, pricier, good for couples and first-timers who want calm.

Vomero

Hilly residential district with bay views; funicular to the centre, better value, less street life.

Near Napoli Centrale (Garibaldi)

Best for early trains to Pompeii or Rome; the surrounding streets are the least pleasant at night.

Watch out

Safety

Naples is a normal big city with a bad reputation it does not fully deserve: violent crime against visitors is rare, but pickpocketing, scooter bag-snatching and taxi overcharging are real. Keep bags zipped and in front, avoid unlit side streets around Garibaldi at night, and agree taxi fares before moving.
  • Unlicensed taxis and drivers who refuse the meter or claim 'cash only' — licensed cabs must take cards and show fixed fares.
  • Pickpockets on crowded buses, the Circumvesuviana and around Garibaldi station.
  • Summer heat and humidity from late June to August; plan indoor or shaded blocks midday.
  • Cobblestones and uneven pavements — wear shoes you can walk in.
  • Ferry and Circumvesuviana timetables change seasonally: check the operator the day before.

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Naples. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

  1. Best months: Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (heat and crowds), Easter week · month by month →
  2. 1 airport and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for NAP: Alibus and fixed-fare taxi rungs, last departures field-checked.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Spaccanapoli, Via Toledo and Quartieri Spagnoli, the waterfront, Vomero.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (National Archaeological Museum, Duomo, Castel Nuovo, Pompeii and Herculaneum) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Ferry and Circumvesuviana fixtures so gate checks can go green.
